- - The flowers are unisexual male, appearing early in spring, before the foliage, medium-sized, arranged on one-year-old branches and multi-year stems, brown in color, grouped in 4-6 in short racemes, lacking a corolla. The bract is scaly, the calyx tube reduced with two calyx segments of 2.5-3 mm in length, containing four stamens.
